My research interests focus on behavioural finance - the impact of people's behaviour, the fact that we are what and who we are, on the financial decisions we make. I am particularly interested in how individuals make decisions about buying shares and other financial assets and how they make decisions about retirement savings and superannuation. My PhD thesis was titled "The Attributes of Shares: What do Investors Value and What Do Their Advisors Believe They Will Value?". This research used adaptive conjoint analysis, a research methodology from consumer behaviour, to explore the factors that are important to individual investors when they make decisions about buying shares. With the support of several large superannuation funds and of ECU, my colleagues Paul Gerrans, Deborah Gardner and Craig Speelman (from the School of Psychology) and I are undertaking a long-term study into how Australian workers make decisions about superannuation.
